The CAIS Academic Tech Retreat was created as a time and place for busy academic techs to get away from the pressures of school to reconnect with colleagues and professionals in their field. Moving into its twelfth successful year, the conference focuses on such topics as curriculum integration, new technologies, customer service and professional development. The relaxed format of the retreat allows conference attendees to form connections and become comfortable with new concepts and ideas to bring back to their work.
The Guest House is a beautifully renovated country inn on private wooded land, adjacent to a state forest with hiking trails and two neighboring lakes. Conveniently located midway between New York City and Boston, Guest House is easily reachable via major highways or by train. The Guest House is the perfect place to reconnect and rejuvenate! We look forward to seeing you there!

What is an open forum or "unconference"?
An unconference, according to the Wikipedia entry, is a "conference where the content of the sessions is driven and created by the participants, generally day-by-day during the course of the event, rather than by a single organizer, or small group of organizers, in advance." While unconferences are popular (because they provide an excellent, flexible venue for ideas, networking, and participation), they have been around for decades, with the best-known format articulated by Harrison Owen as "Open Space Technology ". For an excellent description of the unconference format, see this Huffington Post article, An "Unconference" for Online Communities.

In this session come play in a Minecraft world and learn the basics of this intuitive environment. See if you can survive two nights in survival mode being hunted by zombies, skeletons and creepers before switching gears and learning how to build in creative mode using redstone power sources and switches. Finally, see examples of lessons used by teachers around the world, teaching everything from math to biology!

What do you get when you cross an upper school game design class with a sixth grade math class? You get a unique gamified unit that poses tangible challenges to designers and an engaging, immersive world for students. Gamification, the application of game elements to non-game situations, is a popular method for engaging people in non-game environments. We’ll explore the various aspects of gamification, the process of creating an immersive gamified environment, including lesson plans and challenges, our own steps towards collaboration, and technologies used in the creative process. Participants will leave with concrete, practical tips for creating gamified lessons across all ages and disciplines.

Are you wondering what all the coding craze is about? Have you heard about coding in classrooms, but aren’t really sure of its benefits or where to begin? Then this is the workshop for you. During our time together, we will share how we implemented a coding program (without much coding experience of our own) into our elementary classrooms. This session will provide an intro to computer science, overview of the Code.org online curriculum, and strategies for teaching “unplugged” classroom activities. We will also have hands-on time to explore coding apps appropriate for elementary aged students, such as Scratch, Scratch Jr. and Lightbot. You do not have to be a technology teacher to incorporate coding into your classrooms. If you want your students to be creative, resilient, and patient problem solvers, then integrating coding into your curriculum might be the thing for you!

Keynote: Innovation and Learning- Trends, Discoveries, Failures, and the Joy of the Journey
Innovation is everywhere in our schools. Teachers, students, and administrators are constantly trying new things to enhance learning and advance the mission of our schools. It is an exciting time to be in a classroom. Yet, how do we know if our innovations are making a difference? How do we capture our learning when we experiment and how do we scale our innovations beyond our classroom, lab, studio, or field? In this session Tim Fish will deconstruct several innovations that he has seen in his travels to over 100 independent schools. He will share the idea behind the innovation and talk about how the school worked collaboratively to execute and evolve the idea over time. Tim will focus on the how of innovation as much as the what. He will also talk about the trends in technology that seem to enabling success in schools where active, student-centered learning is thriving.
